The Desert Breath is an artwork created in the Egyptian desert by a team of Greek artists. Google Maps – in part created by Australian software engineer Noel Gordon, brings together a plethora of technology including Street View images collected by vehicles. Google stitches together billions of satellite and aerial images to create the Google Earth observation data.

PCWorld magazine has referred to the formation as a "geological marvel".

The Badlands Guardian was also described by the Sydney Morning Herald as a "net sensation". They altered the suggested 'Guardian of the Badlands' to become Badlands Guardian. Out of 50 names submitted, seven were suggested to the Cypress County Council. Originally discovered by Lynn Hickox, suitable names were canvassed by CBC Radio One program As It Happens. It was the winner of the RTNDA National- TV - short feature award for that year. In 2006 Medicine Hat's CHAT-TV Reporter Dale Hunter did a short feature on the Badlands Guardian. Although the image appears to be a positive feature, it is actually a negative feature (a valley), an instance of the Hollow-Face illusion. The 'head' may have been created during a short period of fast erosion immediately following intense rainfall. The arid badlands are typified by infrequent but intense rain-showers, sparse vegetation and soft sediments. The head is a drainage feature created through erosion of soft, clay-rich soil by the action of wind and water. The apparent earphones are a road and an oil well, which has been in place only a few years, and will likely become invisible once the well falls into disuse and its superficial features are eroded. Because of additional man-made structure, it also appears to be wearing earphones.

Viewed from the air, the feature bears a strong resemblance to a human head wearing a full native American headdress.
